Welcome to the list, Chris.   There are at least a couple of folks on 
the list in the Edmonton area, but I'll leave them to speak for 
themselves and offer higher quality advice (as you're a ham, you 
might already know VE6JY?).

One piece of exotica that you might hear better than the west 
coasters could be trans Atlantic / trans Arctic signals from 
Europe.  Those would be in your local evening with quiet geomagnetic 
conditions.  Try 1215, 1134, 1116, 1422???   The couple of times I've 
DX'ed from up there, I've been impressed at how much more you hear 
from the east and southeast compared with us on the coast.  I wonder 
if you hear Spanish on 530 in the evenings?  That could be Turks & Caicos.

But the down side is that it's more difficult to hear from the west, 
if I remember correctly.
