The gold would be the plating on the connectors
that let the modules attach to each other, without it
the contacts would start to oxidize and become intermittent.

It would make the connection more reliable (so that it
always performs as intended) but would not make the set
pick up signals better than it would otherwise.

Gold is a very good conductor, as is silver, but the ohmic
resistance is not the value in using it. Remember the gold
coins brought up from the S.S. Republic sinking 140 years
ago, after all that time in salt water they are still brilliant.
That is the value.
