- Thread-topic: 3" FSL Tecsun PL-380 Modification-- Look Before You Leap
Hello All,
Â
For those considering a hard-wired 3" FSL transplant replacing the loopstick inÂtheir PL-380 model, some "full disclosure"Âinformation is in order.
Â
1) Although the 3" FSL modification will indeed boost up theÂradio's MW sensitivity to a very high level, the PL-380 is still a $50 pocket radio which was never designed to have such exceptional sensitivity. On wide-open frequencies the transplanted FSL is so sensitive that it will pick up a low-level digital whine from the radio's display. This issue disappears whenever any signal is received (even very weak ones).ÂFurther testing on an older (pre-2012) models or the CC Skywave may show that this issue is limited to newer PL-380's (Tecsun has reduced the internal shielding on models made since 2011).
Â
2) Although the 3" Bar FSL antennaÂwas designed to be as lightweight and portable as possible,Âthe antenna and frame still weigh significantly more than the radio itself. The combination ends up at just over 1 pound (454 grams). Care is necessaryÂwhen carrying the modified radio around to avoid drops, and stress to the bond between the radio and FSL frame.
Â
3)ÂSoldering theÂ250/46 Litz wire to the PL-380 circuit board does require good close-up vision, steady nerves and some soldering skill. The Litz wire diameter is about the largest practical size for soldering to the crammed PL-380 circuit board, and it is not a project for beginners.
Â
4) Those considering the project can get a lot of useful information from PL-380 7.5" loopstick transplant article posted at http://www.mediafire.com/view/du3sr5cd9thqvau/7.5inch-LS-PL380.doc  The PL-380 preparation procedures are identical, and the orange loopstick frame can also be constructed in advance (and trimmed to the 4.75" length required for this FSL project). The loopstick frame can also be glued to the PL-380 in advance (as described in the article), before the FSL is even constructed.
Â
5) Further detailed information will be contained in the upcoming constructionÂarticle. Unless a hobbyist has extensive modification experience,Âit is advisableÂto waitÂfor the detailedÂinstructions before proceeding with the project.Â
