Re: [IRCA] Radio Repair-Sangean ATS 909X

I'm now having a couple of issues with my own ATS 909X. Mine slipped out of my hand and landed hard on a concrete sidewalk right outside my door a year or so ago, and ever since, I've had to fold up pieces of aluminum foil and stick them into the compartment in order for the batteries to make contact. But more recently, it has "puked" up the last two sets of fresh AAs that I've put in. When I open the compartment, a gooey (what I can only assume is alkaline) substance is covering the batteries and it looks like the coverings have peeled off. The battery switch on the inside is set to "alkaline" and I've never switched it over to "NiMH". I used a kitchen knife to take out the last set because I didn't want to get battery acid on my fingers. Now, on top of this, I've discovered that I can only listen to it with headphones on, it won't project any audio through its speaker. I'm giving serious thought to sending it back to Universal Radio in Ohio to see IF it can be repaired. Granted, the Sony ICF-2010 had its disadvantages (not worth a darn when it comes to FM DXing), but it never had problems like these.

Send it to C Crane and be done with it. This is your SECOND one? Yes, Paul, you HAVE dropped and DESTROYED radios before. You need to be more careful. Mine has that problem also. Yes, there is a serious design flaw with the battery box on the ATS-909X. Instead of using springs they used a "tab" to make the batteries tight. This "tab" loses it's strength and then the batteries don't make contact anymore. I cut up a soft drink tab to make a shim. I ought to call Sangean and give them a hard time over the defect.
