Chuck,
I may have misunderstood his comment, but he did say, the loss in
sensitivity he felt was the PIN diodes. The S Meter readings have been
dropping slowly over the past several months. I used to get KSWB 840 at
S9+38 DB off the SW EWE. When I shipped the R8 off yesterday, it was
giving me S9+22. There is a loss on all of my antennas across the board
on the R8, yet the S Meter readings on the SPR4 are normal. I first
thought maybe issues with the matching transformers, coax, etc, but I
check that out and everything is normal. The really weak stuff I get in
the day I have noticed the loss more. Then I checked the antennas on
the SPR4 and found everything normal. There are some other issues with
the R8. The switches are getting sticky and the passband tuning in the
AM mode is no longer centered, so something has changed value. I fiqured
the receiver has needed a tuneup for sometime. I also noticed that the
realy weak TPs signals have been down too. Some of that are conditions,
but the receiver just has not been a good as it was. But the tech at
Drake did say he fiqured the PIN diodes may be at fault. I know little
about the R8. My tech knowledge goes back to tube gear. Working on the
R8 is out of my league. hi. But they will put it back in the orig specs.
I am glad that Drake still works on the R8 series. How long they will
continue, who knows? Grove does any longer and they sid parts are not
available. But Drake has plenty of parts.
