Thanks. I e mailed Grove who I bought it from in 1992 and they said
Drake no longer serviced the units. I knew that wasn't true as someone
on either the IRCA or NRC reflector had said they had one repired by
Drake. Drake e mailed me back stating to send it in. I cannot remember
off the top of my head the tech that designed the R8, but I talked to
him some years ago, just before he retired.

Mine had them too. 
Have you asked them to replace the encoder for the main tuning? This has
been the #1 issue with the R8B although I don't recall if your R8 uses
the same encoder.<<

The R8 and R8A's I don't believe had any issues wth the encoders. I know
I haven't. Chuck Boehnke in Hawaii had an R8B and had trouble and had to
replace the encorder and as I remember he said it was "a job". Chuck was
a tech at California Microwave for years.  For a time Drake was getting
the encoders from another vendor (China?), and not the orig Japanese
encorders and the encoders were going bad left and right. Later Drake
went back to the orig vendor. I sure wish they still made the R8 series.
By now, probably an R9 or R10.
