I agree with both Walt and Colin.  Not too good for DX but great in
noisy offices and on airplanes.

Walgreen's has Coby "bargain brand" noise cancelling headphones for $20
(USD).  I got mine for $5.  :)  A clerk had apparently mismarked the
rack where the headphones were, as 75% off clearance.  I asked nicely to
verify the price and the manager said, "it's supposed to be twenty but
I'll sell you one for five."  I told her "thanks." :)

The Coby ones do have an on-off switch, for the noise cancellation
circuitry.  I wonder if the frequency response in the "off" position, is
compromised, in the least?

They take out a portion of the frequency response and make DXing more

When you are DXing next to thundering surf they sure as heck are...

Now when you are snug in your cabin with your feet next to the fire
playing with your perseus, nose reduction is not so important.

You can spent a little or a lot for NC Headphones.
Mine are Maxell's for $50 and they offer little in the way
of actual noise reduction.
Where they shine is on airplanes, trains and industrial areas.

Walt is right - for most DX applications, they do take something
away.
