Re: [IRCA] Super duper ULR question
Hi Colin,
Thanks for your questions-- and hints, too.
The Ultralight Radio market actually changes quite frequently, due to
the white hot competition among manufacturers in the Far East. Particularly
in the Chinese domestic market, Tecsun, Degen and Redsun are constantly
changing their product lines-- coming out with many new models, and dropping
others. Sangean also recently came out with the fine AM-DX model DT-400W, dropping
the DT-200VX. Tecsun, maker of the E100, dropped it (and apparently, its
PL-200 equivalent) in favor of the new PL-450 and PL-600. Only Sony seems
relatively stable, unable to really compete with low-wage China in the
development of innovative new pocket radio designs. In summary, the AM-DX pocket radio
market changes so rapidly that constant purchasing updates are needed.
Each detailed ULR Shootout (there have been three so far-- the "Round
One" Shootout in December of 2007, the 2008 Shootout in January of 2008, and
the 2008 Summertime Shootout in August of 2008) gives purchasing information
for the different models that are reviewed. These articles are currently
posted in the ULR file section on DXer.Ca. But there is currently no master list
of suggested sources (and prices) for all Ultralight radio models, as of a
given date. Perhaps this is an idea whose time has come.
In the meantime, the latest information on various new models will soon
be available in the 2009 Shootout, which will contain an overview of the
current ULR market, as well as competitive performance tests (from an AM-DXer's
viewpoint) on all the latest new innovative models from the Far East (PL-450,
DE-1123, etc). Each individual Shootout article also contains a detailed
section where the top models from previous competitions are matched against the
new models from the current group, giving everyone the latest information on
the new "top guns.". Hopefully the combination of the current articles and
a new, real-time purchasing guide would help newly interested DXers join in
the highly contagious Ultralight radio excitement.

This question is really directed at Gary DeBock,
our senior leader on the ULR movement...
Just got a fabulous question from a potential ULR user:
"Ok, I have read all about them on DXer.ca...
but there is little or no indication as to where to
buy them...."
There is a buyers guide buried in one of the shoot-outs yes?
Perhaps this is a cue to put together an actual buyers guide
that is not buried as a PDF in the ULR section - something
permanently linked to the homepage...
