According to KAST, they had to make a choice. To put a new FM on (103.9)
or to put 1700 on. They did the FM as there was more money in it I
presume. Getting 10 KW at the current location would be a toughie across
from the CG Air station, the high scoool, and other close in concerns.
Plus, they were worried that moving up to 1700, they would lose a lot of
listeners. The old 1370 has been there since the 30s. Before that they
were on 1230. People know the channel of 1370 all too well to make a
change. They had planned to keep both frequencies, but they could not
fiqure a way to do that. I think a lot of stations fiqured they could
keep both channels in the beginning and that was fine, more stations,
but with the change in the rules, and they discovered they would have to
let one go, they decided to stay put. KAST's coverage on 1370 is not all
that bad being on Youngs Bay. It gets a bit sticky in Seaside at night
in some places, as they null the South, but it still can be heard. They
have plenty of FMs to make up the difference anyway.
There 1230 (KKEE), once you get to Gearhart (2 miles N of Seaside), it
is lost in the jumble at night, 15 miles away. OK< but weak in Seaside
days, but they are on the other side of the hill in Astoria. KAST has
much more of a shot across the bay.
In the 60s and before, that is all the county had to listen to, the two
AMs in Astoria. Then in 68, KSWB Seaside came on.
