Hi Chris,
Welcome to the list. Hey, I'm sure you know how much of a morning
person Don is, and even he did some TP listening after hearing the
results Mick and I had last Saturday on our listening weekend! This
has been an exceptional fall for Asia and Alaska from here in Alberta,
so assuming we still have some good mornings left this might be a prime
year to catch Alaska. I heard KAGV on 1110 last week from down here and
also from Don's place. Last year we heard KJNP on 1170 from Don's
place. I''ve also heard the Nome stations on 780 and 850 this season
from down here, but I know they'll be tough from up there due to local
interference. You will need some very quiet solar conditions to have a
chance at Alaska though. Regarding Hawaii, it has not been a good
year for Pacific signals in general, but your best bet is likely KUAI on
720, which is the only one I've heard on a semi-regular basis the past
few years.
I don't know what your local noise level is like, but the K9AY and
SPR-4 should get you some DU/TP stuff if conditions are right. I use
the K9AY at my home QTH along with the Kenwood R-5000, and hear some
interesting things at times (though granted not as regularly as out at
the beverage farm). A couple of days ago I heard Fiji here at home on
639, and except when old Sol flares up the big Japanese signals on
594/693/747/774 are common. Good luck.
