The WALE-990 problem is still there. Clearly audible on 980 and 1000. I
spoke at some length with their engineer, and the problem is the program
line from studio to transmitter. It appears to be a voice grade digital
line that has music pumped through it. So, there's all sorts of aliasing
that shows up on the LSB of 1000 and the USB of 980. Given the sharp
directional pattern of WALE, I doubt it will be heard much beyond
southeastern MA and RI.
They are not audible beyond +/- 10 KHz, so they are arguably legal. It's a
narrower signal than IBOC. Probably fits the NRSC mask. And, a normal
narrowband radio does not pick up enough of the noise to be an issue.
Listening on 990 shows very little interference.
