Paul,

Your observations are right on.  This is the way I have tuned to hear weak 
Wobblers.  It seems to be less effective for distant listeners on Xtreme 
Wobblers like 1100 has been spewing.

My explanation though, is that as you tune away from the steady state 
carrier frequency, you are shifting the tone of even a very weak Wobbler 
from subaudible range into the mid range most easily heard.  With the 
Xtreme Wobbler, it's wild gyrations are already taking it into the audible 
range so shifting may take it beyond set filters, etc.

It continues to be my contention that the Wobbler is not a signal on the 
carrier but the carrier itself, and de-tuning enhances the varying beat 
note.  So the only exception I would take with your assessment is that the 
carrier does not stay on frequency, it is the carrier that is moving to 
produce the Wobbler.  Watching a spectrum trace of the audio produced by a 
Wobbler shows no underlying steady state beat note, the whole thing is 
shifting back and forth.

And it should be noted that this opinion carries the full force of being MY 
opinion!  So, I'm sure there is nothing left to be said.  At least not 
until you or someone else posts their opinion with equal conviction.

All flubbery aside, whatever it is, it is doing it all over 1100 as I type, 
coming up more and more obvious as the sun sets, predictably in the west -- 
once again my prescience shows no bonds.
