[IRCA] DC Operation of General Coverage Receivers

Hi All,
I've been having the re-occuring thought of operating my Drake R8B (and Kiwa loop) with DC from a shack in the back yard.  The reason for my thoughts are to get my radio away from the house and it's associated electrical noises.  I'm sure I can eliminate direct line noise by disconnecting from the household supply but I am also interested in knowing more about receiving un-wanted QRN direct from power lines posted in front of or near the property as well as noise originating from the neighbors house. I understand that the proximity and noise values between the receiver and any noise source is important, but I'm interested to know if anyone has tried or operates this way. Would checking first with a portable give me an accurate enough reading on conditions?

Doe's anyone out there have any tips and are there any associated drawbacks of running off of a battery (ies)?
Thanks and 73- Doug
PS. This "shack" is non-existant at the moment, but I need a construction project for this summer, hi.
