Dimmer switches, electric blankets, TVI, goldfish bowl oxygenators,
garage doors...the list of things which can cause noise is endless.
Also could be a transformer on a nearby pole courtesy of your local
electric company. First thing I would do would be to use a portable
in and outside the house the next time the noise comes on to see if
you can track the source. I am sure others on this list can
contribute here.

I have the air core version and it's pretty good. It lacks a variable
gain control which has only proven to be a problem with nearby strong
locals (KKMO-1360 5kw 1 mile). However, I don't think they are being
manufactured any more.
