[IRCA] Loop Antenna (ad infinitum...)

Before I strung up my wire outside for the antenna for the Drake, it was in 
a 200' coil in my Radio Shack about a foot or so in diameter. Why didn't 
this act as a Loop Antenna? I tried turning it in several directions, turned 
it horizontal and turned it vertical, but the reception was always the same. 
IS there a reason for this? Just curious.
