Re: [Swprograms] OT Linux

Short answer:

One of my favorite Linux resources is http://www.marcelgagne.com/ --
he has written several easy-to-read books on Linux. His "Moving to
Linux : Kiss the Blue Screen of Death Goodbye!" is a decent read. His
website is pretty good, too.

Another helpful site: http://www.distrowatch.com

Also: http://www.linuxquestions.org.

The best way to go about doing Linux depends on the age of your PC.
For example, I have an old Windows 98SE-vintage 2000 desktop pc, PIII
500 mHz, with 192 MB of RAM, than can run MEPIS 7.0 pretty well.
MEPIS is one of several decent Linux "flavors" (called "distributions"
or "distros") that offers a reasonably straightforward installation
procedure.

If you have an older machine, then the aforementioned Puppy Linux is a
good place to start.

The biggest challenge IMO is getting WiFi working, if you are
outfitting a laptop. Some Wifi cards are much better behaved with
Linux than others.

Tim Lemmon (copied on this e-mail) presented a forum on Linux at the
Winter SWL Fest that got me hooked -- Tim, can you e-mail your
presentation to Eric?

As Eric might now, we have had a lively discussion about Linux and
wifi radios over on the ODXA board. I made the case that an Asus Eee,
a sub-sub-notebook PC selling for as little as $300, could serve as an
"Internet radio" but has lousy speakers. However, you could attach
powered external speakers and do very well.

I have been the lucky recipient of three hand-me-down computers from
family and my IT guy at work; I have versions of Linux running on all
three of them.

I am typing this message on an old IBM R31 laptop PC that my work IT
guy could no longer get to boot up under Windows. It is running MEPIS
7.0.

I'd be happy to take any questions offline (to avoid annoying group
members not interested in Linux.

Give it a shot...I've certainly enjoyed learning the basics of Linux!
