[Swprograms] Digital radio article in USA Today

Highlights:

"After getting a lackluster rollout from both radio stations and
manufacturers last year, digital radio is finally gaining some
traction. Hundreds of radio stations have gone digital in recent
months, and retailers are starting to offer digital radios for homes
as well as cars.

"Analysts and broadcasters say digital radio will bring listeners
better sound quality, as well as new programming choices. That should
generate fresh revenue for an aging medium under siege from satellite
radio and the Web.

""Without (digital), the radio industry signs its death warrant," says
Gartner analyst Laura Behrens. "With it, the industry has a chance to
reinvent itself.""

and

"The FCC is also expected to decide whether to permit digital AM
broadcasts at night. Night broadcasts are barred because of concerns
about interference with analog AM stations, some of which can be
picked up by distant listeners at night."

I didn't know that the IBOC stations couldn't operate digitally at
night -- haven't I read a lot about how WOR / 710 New York's digital
splatter messes up WLW / 700 Cincinnati?
