Re: [Swprograms] European MW broadcaster sites

European medium wave usage is co-ordinated by the ITU
in Geneva including power levels and protection levels
for other broadcasters on the same channel. Recently
for example that has resulted in Lithuania coming to
an agreement with the Russians on 1386 which they had
been running from Kaliningrad, they now only use it I
believe 4 hours a day, the Lithuanians use it the rest
of the time, and in a few years time will hand it
back.

European state broadcasters have an obligation to
cover the entire territory with a decent signal, since
everyone is paying a licence feee, which is one
explanation why powers are higher. The FCC restricts
transmitters to 50kw, someone will know the historical
reason for that, and there is no concept of
broadcasters in the US having to cover the entire
country or an entire state, being commercial they are
basically looking for coverage of where the population
in any market is.

Checking the UK Talksport network, which is AM and DAB
only, no FM, they use a 500 kw transmitter on 1053 and
two 400kw transmitters, one 125kw and one 80kw
transmitter on 1089 together with 23 lower powered
transmitters on 1053, 1089, 1071 and 1107 and still
the UK Radio Listeners Guide says, which I can confirm
from my own experience, coverage is not national.
Areas of Central and NW Scotland, Mid and West Wales
and North Cornwall and Devon still cannot get reliable
24 hour reception. Note European broadcasters use
different transmitters on the same frequency carrying
the same programme at times, that can be fine during
the day but can sometimes cause problems in certain
areas nightime when they are getting signals from more
than one transmitter.
