veteran of the WW II Italian campaign was approached by a 73 year old
man looking for members of the 23rd NZ Battalion. As a boy barely in
his teens, the younger man had befriended the New Zealanders while
interpreting for them; and they had kitted him out in their uniform -
complete with three stripes.
