In my opinion what it means to be a "public broadcaster" has changed in the
last few years.  From what I know, the management of public broadcasting
stations used to come from a non business oriented background and brought
that non business mindset with them in how they ran the station.

In the last 10-15 years more business types have become managers at these
stations and are running them more like businesses.  I'm not saying that a
return to the old days is what should happen, but a more balanced approach
that has elements of both points of view I think would be better than a
management pattern that stresses one point of view to the exclusion of the
other.

This is one of the reasons I wanted to get that discussion going
regarding "what it means to be a public broadcaster".

Inevitably broadcasters of all sorts have to wrestle with the
"bang/buck" dilemma.

The challenge for a public broadcaster -- because it has more latitude
in its metrics -- is what does "bang" mean?  Number of listeners?
Average listener IQ?  Number of "opinion formers" who listen at 2 AM?
