And in a letter yesterday, Thursday 9 December 2004
	to The Guardian
------quote-------------------------------------------
As someone who was very reluctantly relocated to Manchester by the BBC
10 years ago, I must admit to mixed feelings about Mark Thompson's
plans. I spent 30 happy years living and working in London before
being made an offer I couldn't refuse.

Now I am forced to live in a five-bedroom house bought for the cost of
a small bed-sit in Streatham - and with the savings I had no option
but to buy a house in Italy, where we have to spend our summers. My
children have endured a carefree childhood among the most absurdly
friendly people in England and have had to suffer the indignity of a
free education in fabulous state schools, while most of my London
friends have continued to enjoy the privilege of spending huge sums of
money on sending their children to frankly second-rate private
   establishments.

I still have to keep going to the opera, theatre, the ballet and to
concerts both popular and classical, since the north of England is so
culturally rich. And eventually I had to set up my own independent
production company, despite the local competition from some of the
most talented and enthusiastic professionals I have ever met.

Until recently, all this has been a secret known only to those who
live here. We will, of course, welcome the latest "economic refugees"
and they will quickly realise how lucky they are. For many of us,
despite the irritation when we occasionally have to visit it, we are
quite happy that London is a long way away.
