Thanks for these links Dennis. The 160m hams in particular have been interested in this for quite awhile, and came to similar conclusions. Some think its performance is based on radiating feedlines.

Fortunately for receiving, we really can get away with small antennas.

Great timing. It's currently being discussed by a number of broadcast engineers on Facebook. Jim Hatfield's (as in Hatfield and Dawson; an extremely highly respected broadcast engineering company in Seattle) analysis is at:

My opinion is anything he says goes. I've read a number of articles he's written over the years. He's very highly respected in the broadcast engineering field.
