One of the major radio companies has not hired a chief engineer to replace 
the one who left and went to a competitor several months ago.

I believe they have a contract engineer who has to drive approximately 100 
miles to get to the station if they go off the air.  This is unbelievable.

You're right.  At least WREF didn't take as long as most places these days 
would after realyzing they were operating with no audio.

WREF was one of many stations who did away with locally originated 
programming.  The same thing happened over a year ago in Southwestern 
Connecticut but that's a different topic.
