Re: [IRCA] PL-606 Bandscan (with SAT) - El Cajon, CA, 5-15 mid PM

Well, a saltwater path does help. :)

One Sunday in February, I was in Ocean Beach (San Diego area) maybe less than a half mile from the water, at 32°44'29.02"N 117°14'59.66"W.  I did a bandscan from there, and here's just some Santa Barbara / Ventura area highlights...
(On the headings, the first is from me to them, second is reverse.  ERP is toward my location.)

1250 KZER - http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KZER-OB - 187.79mi (302.21km), 308.79°/127.37° - 2.5kW DA (ERP 2.3kW), PL-606 signal = 34/25
1290 KZSB - http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KZSB-OB - 182.159mi (293.157km), 310.24°/128.89° - 500w ND, PL-606 signal = 32/25
1340 KCLU - http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KCLU-OB - 182.159mi (293.157km), 310.24°/128.89° - 650w ND, PL-606 signal = 32/24
1490 KSPE - http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KSPE-OB - 182.159mi (293.157km), 310.24°/128.89° - 1kW ND, PL-606 signal = 32/25
1520 KVTA - http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KVTA-OB - 146.60mi (235.94km), 312.73°/131.69° - 10kW DA (ERP 8.02kW), PL-606 signal = 40/25
1590 KUNX - http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KUNX-OB - 152.74mi (245.81km), 313.10°/132.02° - 5kW DA (ERP 0.42kW), PL-606 signal = 30/21
Also present was 1450 KVEN Ventura under co-channel KFSD Escondido: http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KFSD-KVEN-OB.

I should note that except for a grand total of less than a mile, the path to where I was from triplexers 1290 KZSB, 1340 KCLU and 1490 KSPE is entirely saltwater.  Also, upon checking Google Maps, 1250 KZER is almost right on the beach - the south tower is closer to the shoreline than it is to the north tower!

The bandscan this past Sunday at home was done with the aid of the Select-A-Tenna.  These few near-beach receptions I'm posting (from February 20) in this message were done using only the Tecsun PL-606's built-in 100mm ferrite bar.
Last July 20th (2010) in the mid afternoon, I recorded a few short clips of a few of those SB stations (1290, 1340, 1490), using the Tecsun PL-380 in my backyard (same place I did the original bandscan in this thread).  This was comparing reception using the Select-A-Tenna vs. the PL-380's built-in 80mm ferrite bar.

http://tinyurl.com/PL380-KCLU-20100720-SATvsBF
http://tinyurl.com/PL380-KSPE-20100720-SAT - QRM killed any possible barefoot signal.  (I suspect power lines even though the nearest is about 180 feet away from there.)
And, as a bonus, here's a clip from the same day (2010-07-20) of my reception of 103.3 KVYB (FM) Santa Barbara (212 miles away) on the roof of my house, using the PL-380 and its whip antenna: http://tinyurl.com/PL380-KVYB-20100720. ; Also here's KVYB on the PL-606 on April 1 this year at 32°46'17.4"N 116°57'0"W on a hilltop (~850-950 ft elevation) about 3/4 mi NW of my house: http://tinyurl.com/PL606-KVYB-20110401-hilltop.

Great bandscan Stephen. It never ceases to amaze me how strong the Santa Barbara GY stations come into San Diego County. ms
