When I was commuting north from San Jose in the pre-dawn hours, KEX IBOC was
obliterating a Hindi station on 1200 in Soquel CA.  The station's primary
audience was in San Jose, so their nighttime audience was zilch due to KEX.
During daytime hours, there was no problem.  The Soquel station should not
have been planning on serving a San Jose audience from their location (their
primary area is Monterey Bay Area as far as FCC is concerned), but the
signal got to San Jose easily in the daytime so that's where they sold their
advertising.
