We always stay in Kihei (too close to Mount Haleakala) but you have to go more to the north or northwest for much DX. One evening in September of 2000 I stopped at a rest stop near the Maui Ocean Center northwest of Kihei and to my surprise found KOMA (now KOKC) bombing in on the rental car radio at 7:30 PM local time!! That made my day.

I know Maui very well having vacationed there perhaps 20 times, and always with a radio (up to a Kenwood R500 once!). Yes, I preferred the area around Lahaina and Kaanapali best for some great DX. My last visit was last February and enjoyed lots of mainland stations using at that time my Kaito 1103 only. I'll look forward to trying a modified eton on my next visit. I actually did very well DXing in Kihei as well, though. Once, I stayed at a place on the water that had about 200 to 300' from the apartment building to the ocean, and with a "mini-BOG" I recall hearing really good Pacific island DX late into the evening using Colin's DX440 that I had borrowed. For most of my visits, though, I was more into Tropical band DXing and Hawaii was superb for this....Zambia is at the antipode to Hawaii, and so came in at armchair level, simply using a telescopic whip antenna on the beach. Another time in Maui, I purchased a Superadio III at K-mart and spent a fun overnight DX ses!
sion on the lanai picking up probably 40 or 50 stateside and Canadian stations....I do recall being frustrated over not knowing the frequency with certainty though! Great radio and great sound, though! Honolulu, though, was the pits in the buildings, but actually quite descent down on the beach on Waikiki! At dusk, there weren't a lot of people milling about, so DXing on MW actually worked out OK with the internal ferrite core......Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC
