I've DX'ed from Maui several times. The key to DX'ing success there is that you have to get away from the shadow of Mount Haleakala, a 10,000 foot dormant volcano. We always stay in Kihei (too close to Mount Haleakala) but you have to go more to the north or northwest for much DX. One evening in September of 2000 I stopped at a rest stop near the Maui Ocean Center northwest of Kihei and to my surprise found KOMA (now KOKC) bombing in on the rental car radio at 7:30 PM local time!! That made my day.

Hawaii is a lot of fun. Been over there 4 times. Never made it to Maui though, but the other main islands. Kauai is my favorite. If I was to live on one of the islands, Kauai would be the one. A great DX location too. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager
