[IRCA] Sony SRF-85 Walkman.. an Ergonomic Nightmare

Hello All,

Having been fascinated from Day One by the SRF-59's master IC chip,
Sony's CXA1129, I saw another CXA1129-enabled Walkman, the discontinued SRF-85,
up for auction on eBay... and decided to go for it.

This unit is a yellow and gray "Sports" Walkman, having the standard
AM-FM stereo circuitry (plus an "AVLS" function) in a somewhat water-resistant
package, presumably for modest rain protection. Size, shape and DX ability
are also very close to the SRF-59... with one glaring exception.

If you dislike the SRF-59's tiny tuning thumb wheel, be thankful you
don't have to play with this dime-sized tuning tragedy. It truly adds an
element of gambling to DXing, whereas the chance of getting on a DX station's
frequency depends not only on your super-sensitive thumb, but on your luck for
the day. Your luck decreases dramatically as you go up in frequency, so that
your chances of hitting it just right on 1670 are about the same as winning
the Lottery. Down in the 530-600 kHz range, the radio lets you "win" a few
easy ones, as if trying to sucker you in to trying your "X" band luck. If you
fall for the bait, and give in to the challenge, you will inevitably discover
that the odds are viciously stacked against you, and the "house" will win
every time.

Unless you have the "thumb of a brain surgeon and the patience of a
Saint" (from Colin), I would strongly recommend that you "thumb your nose" at
this bizarre DXing Casino.

                   73, Gary
