Bill,
Forgot to note that some references refer to this type of antenna as
a folded monopole.
Actually, it is no more a unipole or monopole than any series-fed
vertical. In fact, it is a dipole system, but the other half of the
dipole is "virtual," and is supplied by the earth.
That is one reason why the old center-fed horizontals were in-
efficient radiators, at least in that the "virtual" other half of
the dipole was PARALLEL to, and cancelled the radiation of the
horizontal part of the system, leaving the vertical feed ele-
ments to do the significant radiation!
