When I was on Univ. 7 Seas (mid-60's) I spent 3 days in Manila.
Met some local fellows one day through a student-friendship
program and they took me to visit DZRM-1190, DZMT-1100
The Station of the Manila Times, and the FEBC station DZAS
on 680. Still have a business card from Warren Beals, and
a tape with copies of jingles from DZMT whose format was
a copy of the "beautiful music" then used by WPAT 930 NYC
including the "gaslight" jingle. Next stop was HK and one day,
I took the hydrofoil to Macau and met the CE of Radio Vila
Verde-735 and nice studio/xmtr tour, also of his ham shack
(CR9AH a very famous ham DXer then). We were told by the
school to avoid the hydrofoil (40 min. trip) and use the
Victoria Steamer (3-1/2 hour trip) because the hydrofoil
company was operated by communists. Naturally every
one of the students took the hydrofoil, except I came back
so late from Macau, the steamer was the only thing running
and I got in some trouble for missing ships curfew. Macau
even then was famous for casino action. They weren't
sure why I wanted to go there (a really tiny place) and
not gamble, I was then over 21.
As for JO land we had stopped in Yokohama and it was,
as I recall, too complicated to try and get to any radio
stations, plus it seemed less of a novelty for those
stations to have visitors from what I could gather.
