I've found it depends on how strong the desired station is vs the 
interference.  If the signal level is varying and reducing one brings up 
the strength of the other, then it makes more sense to ignore the 
S-meter and adjust the controls and listen for the desired station's 
audio.  For example, when I'm trying to phase out KFBK to hear a TP, or 
phase out KNBR and hear KBRW, etc.

Locals on the other hand are best nulled by watching the meter
