Great clip, Walt! It reminds me of my best-ever reception of HLAZ (also in
Russian with ID) a full 16 years ago! Colin has it on his Web site as part
of this podcast:
http://www.dxer.ca/images/stories/podcasts/dx_podcast_sept14_06.mp3
I wish I had had Minidisc or hard drive recording back then, instead of
noisy cassette tape!
It is the second DX audio clip into Colin's podcast. The location was
Grayland, about 600 miles south of the Queen Charlotte Islands for your
recent HLAZ catch. I remember my recording well, as Craig Siegenthaler of
Kiwa was testing his prototype "MAP" unit on weak signals during that
DXpedition on the weekend of March 19, 1990. My recording was made 2+ hours
after local sunrise... Wasn't your recent clip at THREE hours past your
sunrise?! Wow--that's pretty incredible audio, considering the hour.
It's really something how HLAZ has been a strong performer all these years,
when you consider other "regulars" that have faded over time, such as A3Z
Tonga. Like HLAZ, it used to be one of those we relied on as a band
indicator of DX conditions to the region.

Just to wet your apetite for TP dx on the MW band, check out my clip of HLAZ
at 17:30 UTC (10:30 AM local) signing on in Russian on 1566. In case the
link doesn't work, go to Colin Newell's excellent dx site at: www.dxer.ca
and click under sounds. I have many hours of fun ahead of me editing all
the wonderful mp3 files recorded this weekend on the Queen Charlotte
Islands............Walt Salmaniw, Victoria, BC
