Not to single out John, or anyone else, but I have to agree
with Bob. We cannot put terms or conditions on tests,
or we will surely see fewer of them.
In this case, I have no reason to doubt that Kent Winrich
fully intended to QSL the test promptly. Kent is a DX'er
himself and very friendly to the hobby...but there was
no way for him to foresee the decision by management
to want to rapidly install HD transmitters, or
his move/job change. I can think of at least one other
DX test where similar things happened.
For me, the "proof" of my reception is a good quality
recording. QSL cards are nice tokens, but I think some
DX'ers place too much value on them.
I worked at WFLI radio years ago, and saw the CE there
"rubber stamp" reception reports without ever once
listening to the recording, or checking details against
the station log. At WDEF, the situation was much the
same...so how "real" is such a verification?
I've also personally received many, many reports
from DX'ers that were simply false or so incomplete
that verification wasn't possible. Some of our ranks
are clearly just submitting reports to tests when they
did not make an actual reception---again, who are
they cheating, except themselves?
And don't get me started on DX'ers who submit reports
without return postage, or an SASE. Or they submit
an hour long tape that isn't cued to the station
ID or test material. Do you really think that engineers
have nothing else to do but listen to your recordings or
address envelopes?
But while I'm trying to clear the "backlog" of DX tests
without verifications, are there any others that still
need replies? I'll try to contact those people and
work something out too.
