Charles,
I use a standalone audio DSP along with my MP3 recorder. I feed one stereo channel of the recorder with the DSP output and the other channel is fed the audio straight from the receiver. That way I have the DSP processed audio and if for some reason I want to hear or separately process the raw audio on the computer, I have that too. When I send off MP3s with a reception report I explain that by switching back and forth between left and right channels, either form of my reception can be heard. If the two channels are played together the result is enhanced content but with none of the other sound missing, the balance control lets you pick how much of both. There are really three ways to hear the original recording -- raw, variably mixed while listening, and processed.
If you are concerned about some form of digital artifacts because of processing the audio through two digital devices, I have noticed no such problem. It would be nice to go digital all the way from the DSP through to the final MP3 recording, but I'm sure that's out of my price range.

5. This is even farther in the future, but is there anyone out there in
IRCA Romper Room who has used DSP with MP3 files and the like?
I'm ahead of the pack in some aspects of digital, but haven't so much as
a clue about other.
