Thanks everyone for setting me straight on this.
 
John, you described it very well, with the last 2-3 digits being erratic. Without available schematics, I wanted to ask first before opening it up or sending it away. I'm wary of tackling modern equipment unless I'm positive I can handle it.  "The part is electromechanical so they can wear out. It only means you are a good "Tune By Hand" SWL."  <smile> Definitely a compliment, I'll take it, hi. I'll go for a knob over a key pad any time. Doug, You have a bad "encoder", the tune control device right behind the tune knob. It is easy to diagnose, especially when tuning in SSB. The symptoms are erratic revolution of the last two or three digits. As you try to tune SSB or ECSS you have trouble zero beating. The key pad will continue to work as it is not affected.
I had my 4 year old R8B's replaced by Drake about 8 months ago. It is not expensive nor does it take a lot of time. Mine was back in a few days. While I could have replaced it myself it is a better idea to use Drake as they look the unit over. Great people those Drake employees.
Email Drake for a shipment/repair number & send. You'll be glad you did. This is not a big problem among Drake receivers. The part is electromechanical so they can wear out. It only means you are a good "Tune By Hand" SWL.

PS I work part time at Universal Radio. We rarely see any problems with any model made by Drake.
