Doug, You have a bad "encoder", the tune control device right behind the tune knob. It is easy to diagnose, especially when tuning in SSB. The symptoms are erratic revolution of the last two or three digits. As you try to tune SSB or ECSS you have trouble zero beating. The key pad will continue to work as it is not affected.
I had my 4 year old R8B's replaced by Drake about 8 months ago. It is not expensive nor does it take a lot of time. Mine was back in a few days. While I could have replaced it myself it is a better idea to use Drake as they look the unit over. Great people those Drake employees.
Email Drake for a shipment/repair number & send. You'll be glad you did. This is not a big problem among Drake receivers. The part is electromechanical so they can wear out. It only means you are a good "Tune By Hand" SWL.
