[HCDX] Drake SPR4

I have added another receiver to my collection in the form of the Drake
SPR4. It was given to me by a fellow DXer that never used it anymore. It
has basically been sitting since around 1980 when he quit using it much.
In the meantime, the output cap between the speaker and the output
transistor opened up, so no audio. I thought the output tansistor had
died and I did not have any. So instead of fiddling with it, I took it
to a tech in Portland who repaired it for $75, so not bad. I just
picked it up today.

Not a bad little receiver. It works pretty well with the EWE and
beverage. The skirts in AM are a bit wide so I will be getting a few
mods done to getthe SSB filter (2.4 khz) to work in AM. Plus since I
live near an electric fence, I really need a noise blanker as the R8 and
the R1000 has. In 1971 when the SPR4 was purchased the noise blanker was
an option. Hopefully I can find one out there in time. Even if not
working, the tech in Portland said he could probably repair one.
The SPR4 has much better signal handling than the Kenwood R1000. But
of course the R8 is the best. But the SPR4 will make a great back up
after I get everyting done.
