Interesting. One way to cut out the static charge build up is to use a
transfomer like device of which one end goes to ground which provides the
discharge path.  I wish I could draw a picture but both the primary and
secondary of one end are tied together and grounded. The high side of the
primary to the receiver and the high side of the secondary to the antenna
wire.  Works nicely.  Protects you and your radio...  and still provides
some really great reception.
