[HCDX]: RE: Beverage antennas
Patrick asks..
"what short (sort) of a beverage could be used for low angle"
The subject of beverage antennas, is in involved subject.
In short, a long longwire antenna several wavelengths long (aka beverage antenna
named after its inventor) , designed for the frequency of interest will be an
excellent antenna, for directions in the plane of the antenna.
For example, a longwire antenna which is 120 meters long running northeast/southwest
would be an excellent low angle receive antenna for 60 and 90 meters for stations to the
northeast and southwest when mounted 2 to 3 meters above ground.
This antenna will also work well on higher frequencies, but with increasing directional
characteristics.
If you choose to terminate (ground) the long wire into its characteristic impedance
(400-600 ohms) the antenna becomes very uni directional towards the terminated end.
I have had good luck with the directional characteristics of my 100 meter long wire,
which is not terminated. It is directional from medium wave on up to 30 Mhz.
This antenna is prone to high static buildup and proper lightning precautions must be
used.
Again this is a detailed subject and much has been written on this.

Jerry
