Re: [IRCA] KKXA 1520 / 1170 with India music

That's interesting, Gary.  I had thought it was Spanish I was hearing under my local KCBQ during the several seconds they're off the air while making their pattern switch.  If KLOK is in fact something else, and if what I'm hearing when KCBQ is off is in fact Spanish, I wonder who it could be?  KFAQ generally seems to be a no show here for some reason, even though KOKC is usually quite reliable.
This has me wondering now... I wonder what TPs I might have a chance for on 1170?  My local KCBQ on that frequency transmits their 50 kW from 9.3 miles away at a heading of 7°.  Their DA sends an equivalent of 112 kW toward me across 8 mS/m ground, resulting in a typical reading on my barefoot PL-606 of anywhere from 77 to 80 dBµ or so depending on where I am in the house or yard (with some places displaying several dB outside that range).  At night they drop down to 2.9 kW with a reading in the low to mid 60s or so, and their carrier shifts off frequency about 70 Hz or so.  A few days ago I recorded this video of my PL-606 receiving KCBQ in the mid/late afternoon at a location up the street from my house - do I have any chance for any TPs (or TAs, DUs, LAs or KJNP North Pole, AK) under that? ;)

P.S. I've observed the discussion re: the PL-505 on the ultralightdx group.  Based on what I'm reading so far, I think I'll stick with my PL-606, even though it can't do what's shown in this photo.  Now if the PL-505 could, I might give it a second thought. ;)  (BTW in that photo, from bottom to top: 1 depicts sensitivity, 2 is tuned to a local station (the one to its right demonstrates co-channel nulling), 3 (as well as 1) depict selectivity, and 4 is tuned to the 168th harmonic, showing the signal strength of the pest.)  I guess I'd be expecting just a bit much from an ultralight? ;)

Also speaking of tripping up TP DXers, I still remember (and enjoy) the post you made some time ago about thinking you had 1566-HLAZ on your Sony SRF-M37V/W (I forget which) and it turned out to be 1450-KSUH. :-)

Hi Bill,

1170-KLOK in San Jose, CA plays a Punjabi music format, and has tripped up many TP-DXers who thought that they had something very exotic.

Checking in on KKXA 1520
once in a while and a few days ago I heard sports and thought they were finally
on the air with a format. This sports show did not parallel that of KRKO 1380 so
I guess they were tapping from a network. The next day they were back to their
usual Radio Song loop which must be driving some people up the wall by now. Any
idea when all this testing will be finished and when they finally start
programming of some kind and are they leaving any clues about what the format
will be? Their daytime signal is fairly strong here in Victoria and will just
reach Nanaimo BC with a trace of audio.
At 01:30 I tuned in to 1170 and I'm hearing Hindi or Punjabi music under semi
local 24hr KPUG Bellingham Wa. If there are no ethnic format stations south of
49 and west of the Mississippi then I think I'm probably catching KJNP out of
North Pole AK for the first time.. I can't locate a streaming audio link from
their web home page so verification isn't possible. If anyone out there can come
up with alternatives then please let me know.Bill in BC
