Re: [IRCA] Wi-Fi legality (OT)

Chris,

Oh yes, the Direct TV boxes, Dish too are illegal in Canada, but the
Star Choice boxes (Canadian TV) are not illegal in the states. Many
Americans have a Canadian broker and sub to the Canadian TV fare. There
is no licensing for it in the US, but it is not enforced. It is kind of
a "Grey Market". In Canada, more socialist, you can go to jail for
watching American TV over an American satellite receiver. If Star Choice
Canada finds out an American is watching Canadian TV via Star Choice,
without a Canadian addy, all they do is shut the reeiver down, as they
cannot knowingly sell to the US market. But if you are an American with
a Canadian address, they do sell to the American. Also alot of Canadians
have Summer homes in the states and many get Canadian TV that way. It is
very hard to police. So often it is a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" sort of
thing. Star Choice will gladly take American money if they don't know
about it. hi. As they say Money Talks. As you said, laws and rules vary
all over the place.
As far as the Wifi goes, I will use it as long as I can, but I wont
be greedy and use up their megs. I basically use it for e mail. If I go
on anything like You Tube, I do it late at night, as I know they aren't
online. But again, I have no clue whre it is coming from. I know in the
early evening, the speed slows way down, so I stay clear of it then,
especially.
No cable here either, as I don't want the radiation. My DX it too
important to me. Dish and my other satellite programming causes no
noise.
