I ran into a similar situation. You say you tried the HD inside a PC  
- when you booted the computer, did the power-on BIT info that  
scrolls (quickly) across the screen in text right after powering up  
the PC indicate that the computer sees the drive? Alternatively, did  
you go into the system BIOS and determine whether the BIOS could  
"see" the drive from the setup menu? If the power-on BIT or BIOS says  
it can see the drive but the operating system cannot, it may be a  
formatting or partitioning problem that sometimes can be dealt with  
via software. However, if the BIOS reports it can't see the drive at  
all, then it's definitely a hardware issue.

If your BIOS can see the drive but the OS can't, let me know - I may  
be able to recommend some software to recover the data.
