Or right click with the cursor on the text area and type Ctrl-A which will select all text. If there is anything there this will also highlight it, as Doug describes.

Mine have all been fine here.
I'm no PC genius, but in reference to Kevins comment, for a temporary fix,
perhaps you could use the left button on your mouse and just highlight the
area where the text should be. The highlighting should give you the black
background you need to read the message.
