For some reason unknown to me, the ferrite antenna nulls on NW pest stations are not as clean and distinct during TP-DXing propagation as they are during stable daytime ground wave propagation. Both 560-KPQ and 750-KXTG can be easily nulled into the noise around local noon, but during sunrise propagation theyÂtypically chop upÂ558-HLQH Âand 747-JOIB, with only a minor reduction in their splatter when the end of the FSL is directed at them. My guess is that thereÂis both a ground wave and sky wave componentÂin their signals during the sunrise propagation, resulting in less than optimal nulling results. When nulling Seattle pests during ground wave propagation, for example, it's possible to put them completely down in the noise if you know bothÂthe horizontal angle andÂthe vertical arrival angle of their signal (neither of which ever change). During TP-DXing propagation the vertical angle seems to be all over the map, making the nulls seem much less effective.

Hi Gary:

Wenatchee is about 77 degrees and Seoul about 310. So why not just null KPQ? That puts Seoul very close to the peak of the antenna.

Hi Nick,

<CLIP>

Actually 558-HLQH has had pretty good signal strength here as well, Nick, but it suffers greatly from 560-KPQ splatter at this location. As you are aware the ferrite-based antennas have no back side rejection here such as they would at a solid rock ocean cliff location like Rockwork, and even with the modest DSP selectivity currently offered in Ultralight radios the signal from 558-HLQH routinely gets plastered by KPQ splatter here.

Hi Gary,

Do you receive HLQH-558 particularly at your
location? Â I've been finding this season that
HLQH is usually considerably more readable than
HLSA-603 here, as if the latter is
undermodulated. Â I don't think there is a new
noise source around 600kHz drowning it out.

You've usually had better signals overall on the
low band Asians, but I haven't seen much mention of ÂHLQH.

best wishes,

Nick
