[IRCA] Audio file recording question

Since I updated my computer to Windows 7 a while back, I have lost track of how to record an audio file so I can attach it to an e mail. I tried on both the laptop and the desktop computers. Both have the Sound Recorder built into MS. I can bring it up and play a cassette or CD on the computer, but there must be something I need to do to record the audio, as when I play the audio through either computer, by cassette or CD, I can hear it. I bring up the Sound recorder and hit record, but when I play it back, I get nothing. Any help? Thanks.
