Day one at Grayland was quite interesting, wit a mix of Asians and DUs.
I'll need lots of time to review the recordings, but here are he early
impressions. These logs were made using Chuck's DKAZ at 242 degrees.
There were plenty of Aussie ABC stations, as well as some commercial
stations like 4KZ-531, 2NM-981, and 4TAB-891. There were also some
Kiwis at times, but they seemed to mostly vanish as dawn approached.
The expanded band was also quite active with audio showing on most
channels, including a mix of South Asian and Middle Eastern programs on
1701.
Pacific Islands were noted early on, with Tahiti, Tonga, and several
Hawaiians producing audio before 0600. No sign of Fiji, although the
SDR may have caught it while I slept.
Japanese stations were also abundant, including several commercial
stations (954 1008 1053 1134 1242 1260 1287 1332 1350 1422 1440) and
some lower tiered NHK outlets (1386 1089 etc). China was almost
completely absent except possibly 1098. A few possible Filipinos were
heard on 1062 1512 and 1314. There was also something that might've
been RRI or a Filipino on 999, judging from the voice inflections.
Some channels had 3 stations mixing. 1053 at one point had Japan, the
Korean Jammer, and a DU. There was a similar story on 1512 towards
sunrise, with one of the stations having an interview in American English.
Conditions were a bit unstable, with huge variations in signal
strength. Some frequencies shifted back and forth between Asia and DU
signals. 830, for example, sometimes had JOBB dominant with a huge
signal and other times had the Aussie on top. Similarly, 1386 bounced
back and forth between NHK2 and New Zealand.
The abundance of Asians was a surprise, given recent geomagnetic activity.
