Hello,
For the cast few weeks I have been hearing a weak Spanish language station under Radio Encyclopedia on 530. This morning between 0900 and 1000 UTC the station was strong enough to overwhelm RE most of the time. The only other station I can find that might be a possibility is Guantanamo at 1KW. Should I assume this is what I am hearing or could there be other possibilities?

Hello All,
The auroral conditions completely wiped out the Asiatic stations here this morning, but it's obvious that there was highly unusual propagation from the South Pacific. Around 1345 several DU frequencies (forming an NZ pattern) managed moderately strong carriers-- even in this DU-dead zone. These were 594 (weak), 603 (weak), 657 (moderate), 675 (moderate) and 765 (weak). Of course I knew very well who all of these NZ carriers were-- which made it even more frustrating when this mediocre location didn't allow any of them to come up to audio. It must have been a fantastic day at the coast... or even in Victoria!
738-Radio Polynesie in Tahiti was again the only South Pacific station to manage fair audio here this morning (around 1403), repeating its performance from yesterday. Congratulations to Tim Tromp in Michigan for again receiving audio from 702-Sydney and 738-Tahiti, and to Richard in Oklahoma for his reception of audio from 738-Tahiti on his PL-310 Ultralight. After Nick's reception of audio from 603-Waatea and 765-Kahungunu yesterday, I imagine that he had quite a New Zealand bonanza this morning.

As much as I would like to chide Gary with reports of widespread multi-continental receptions on all bands and all frequencies, it was more of a case of squeezing a dehydrated lemon into an empty martini glass. No one showed up for the party... or any party for that matter.
If there could have been less than zero, today was it.
I jumped out of bed at 13:55 and sprinted directly to the SRFLA-50 and its newly mated Sony 2010...
only to hear... domestics.
When it became abundantly clear that there would be no trans-oceanic reception, I snooped around 900 and 940 looking for Hawaii - I have encountered Korean programming on 900 while at Jordan River and maybe some this morning - but pretty sure it was not Hawaii.
Within 5 minutes it was confirmed - the only whines, whistles or squeals were between my middle-aged ears.
Funny that in 4 days of abandoning amateur radio in favor of 100% medium-wave listening, I have been rewarded with nothing but punishment.
Another day tomorrow.
Colin lives in Victoria... in the shadow of DXers like Walter and Nick... using radios like the Sony 2010 and antennas built by people like Gary Debock...

Things are still decidedly auroral, and mostly New Zealand (I think,
because IDs were hard to come by). Quite a lot of thunderstorm QRN,
but the worst of the local noise held off until 1421UT today. The
other unusual observation was the number of weak audios with big
carriers. I usually find 612, for example, to start to show audio
even when the carrier is still fairly low level. Today, it needed some considerable beef in the carrier before it was audible.
pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):
none
reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):
none
not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be
understood by a native speaker:
612 4QR woman talking //774 at 1416UT
Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :
531 slow vocal mx fighting with the local noise 1357UT and onward, no
talk on the hour; 531 PI?
603 man talking 1409UT, likely Waatea, as had a vaguely Tagalog
cadence to it; strong carrier, poor audio
702 man talking, very weak, various times, never able to nail down a parallel
738 sounded like DU EE by man 1411UT, but no parallel available
(things were very erratic)
756 man talking 1408, no parallel available
774 3LO, //612 above 1416
882 woman talking at 1400, then bits of instrumental mx. Southern Star?
909 laid back choral singing 1419UT; just about the time I brought up
the Southern Star webstream, the nastier local noise kicked in at
1421UT and pretty much killed it.
Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):
567 891 1098

Actually, I believe that 765 wasn't that uncommon on the Vancouver
Island coast in the '80s Gary, back when it was 2ZK (I wonder what
Patrick remembers; bound to be a QSL!). Even heard it at home a
time or two, using unamplified box loop and transmogrified HRO if I
remember right. But, propagation changes over the years it seems.

These guys were commonly observed to be running day power at night last season. How can I tell with almost 100% certainty? Well simply by catching them during good sunset skip cx and not having them drop power at sunset which should bury them into the mud of other stations. 73 KAZ Barrington IL

While I know that this is not politically correct to say this, WMOB is one station that can be called a cheater. They intentionally have run day power at night for most of the past two decades and I chatted with a DXer who spoke to their owner about this.
This is why they've been heard in Europe. I believe they've been fined at least once for this. 73 KAZ

I won't say "Richard in Oklahoma" heard audio from 738-Tahiti. There was too much slop from nearby 740-KRMG (25 kW), and probably KTRH, to know whether I heard anything
other than a het on 738 kHz. Sadly KRMG goes to 50 kW at 1230 GMT thus blocking further reception 738 here each morning.
