[IRCA] Oregon Cliff Ultralight DU's for 8-24

Hello All,

The last morning of South Pacific DX at the 400' high cliff was pretty 
wild, with the torrid DU propagation back in full swing. After a couple 
of relatively "normal" days (with only the 10 regular NZ stations, 7 
Aussies and 738-Tahiti showing up at good levels) propagation took a 
dramatic upturn, and some relatively obscure frequencies could be 
investigated. 666 kHz apparently had a mix of French from Noumea and DU 
English from an UnID Australian. 783 had Access Radio (the 10 kW Kiwi 
station) all by itself, although with underperforming signals as usual. 
Finally 639 had a mix of the 2 kW Radio National (Kiwi) station and a 
presumed 2HC from Coff's Harbour, playing classic pop music instead of 
the call-in talk program that it had 2 years ago (at the 1300-1400 UTC 
time slot).

Some Japanese big guns on 594, 666, 747 and 774 made their first weak 
appearance of the DXpedition around 1245 before the DU's reached full 
strength, but the Cliff apparently cuts their signals way down because 
of an unfavorable signal arrival angle (directly in line with the 
cliff). As such, a fanatic DU-DXer can enjoy South Pacific DX pretty 
late into the summer season with serious problems with Asiatic TP 
intruders... although there are other sheer cliffs in the area which 
would presumably reverse this situation, and favor the Asiatics at the 
expense of the DU's.

We took several videos and photos of the 400' high Oregon Cliff 
DXpedition site, which I hope to upload shortly (along with booming DU 
signal MP3's) for those who are interested. The DXpedition video 
includes a shot directly down into the ocean from the 400' high level 
(with no significant guard rail or fence)... one of the first 
psychological challenges that was necessary to overcome :-)
