Re: [IRCA] OFF TOPIC: Honolulu Band Scan

Hi. When I lived in Hawaii, 1978-87, I routinely heard the east coast and the midwest on winter nights, especially Sunday nights. When Casper Wy went off the air at midnight Monday morning, I often heard WBZ morning drive time. I regularly heard WGN whenever KDWN would sign off Sunday nights. Probably my best U.S. catch was on 570. I was listening to a Lakers game on KLAC, when I heard, "The weather for Southeastern South Dakota in the immediate WNAX listening area ..." and they were gone just that fast. Similarly, on 1100, I heard WWWE Cleveland for about 30 seconds mixed with KFAX.
From the mainland the two Hawaiians I have heard were 830 and 1040 kHz.
While living in Kaneohe, I won a call-in contest on KVOK, Kodiak Ak, just before sunrise. They asked me on the air if I could come by the station to pick up my prize, and I told them where I was. A fellow dx-er, Dale Park, and I sometimes listened on the beach near Kaaawa, we heard CKLW-800. We had to explain to a cop what we were doing, so we let him listen to CKLW. There were some coastal regulars on graveyard frequencies, including Fort Bragg Ca on 1230, Crescent City on 1240, Arcata on 1340, with 1400 and 1450 usually a jumble of stations. I was never able to hear anything on 1490, due to KUMU on 1500. My best foreign catches from Hawaii were: India on 1071 and 1134, Thailand on 1575, the Philippines on 1143, and the BBC from Oman on 1413 kHz.
Thanks for the Honolulu band scan. It brings back fond dx memories.

Thanks for the nice bandscan from Honolulu! Quite a few call changes and frequency swaps from how I remember it. I too logged KORL here back in the day. 'Wish I were there right now. ms

Mixing business with pleasure. Playing with the Kia Sedona rental car radio, while waiting for someone to come and meet me resulted in "expected" stations. Was amazed that the only other island AMer heard was from nearby Lihue, Kaui. I remember one time I was in Honolulu and could hear the West Coast stations during Hawaii daytime. Think car radios were better in those days, at least they had external antennas! Could be crappy Sedona AM section of the radio.

Here is what I heard. Asterisk is the "assumed" station calls, since many didn't give them, preferring AM 650 etc. All were from Honolulu or Oahu with the exception of KUAI/720 from Eleele, Kauai. Keep in mind this is not a scientific "bandscan", just what I heard sitting in my car at Ala Moana Park, Honolulu. No sign of KORL, wherever they are. I was trying to hear the calls, a nostalgic listen since it was my only Hawaiian station ever heard from Mainland, from New Jersey in the 60's and later from California in the 70's. Thought they were on some frequency, but did not hear them. The Star Advertiser newspaper did not list radio stations as they once did.

590 KSSK Oldies
650 KRTR Oldies
690 KHNR News/Talk
720 KUAI Mix of Hawaiian, AC and CW, very weak.
760 KGU Bloomberg Financial
830 KHVH Talk
880 KHCM Chinese?
940 KKNE AM 940, Hawaiian mx
990 KIKI Hawaiian mx and some talk
1040 KLHT Religious
1080 KWAI IRN news
1130 KPHI Spanish?
1210 KZOO Japanese
