[IRCA] New Radio Question

Dear Steve:

I saw your query about portables for travel. Let me tell you about three -- each of which has SSB capabilities.

I've had very good luck with the Tecsun PL600, the Grundig G3 and the Grundig G6. The PL600 is particularly nice because it's been marked down to $69.99 on amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Tecsun-PL-600-Shortwave-Radio-Reception/dp/B001OOHG08). The G6 has a very small form factor -- but almost too small. However, Universal Radio right now has "reconditioned" G6s (that usually means radios that were purchased and returned....usually that means they've been "checked out" before they're put back up for sale) for $59.98 (http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/0626.html).

I've always had exceptionally good experiences with Universal. And I just bought another radio from Amazon....always had good experiences with it, too.

Some folks have had bad experiences with the Tecsun radio, but mine has been a real gem. I really like the Grundig G3 (http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/4033.html) a lot ... it's the first radio I grab to take on a trip when I can't take my Eton E1XM tabletop receiver.

Those are three to consider -- including two on sale. I'm sure other folks on this list -- most of them much smarter than me -- will have comments on these receivers and perhaps some other suggestions, too.

Good hunting!

IRCA,

It seems to me that there has been a lot of new small, feature rich
radios come out in the last year or so, and I feel like I have lost
touch with the big picture. I have a need for a pretty small portable
wth AM, FM, and SSB. By small, I mean it needs to be able to fit in a
brief case without taking up a lot of it. And at the same time offer
pretty good performance. I have an ATS-909 that meets all of these
needs except for size. Does anyone have suggestions for something smaller?

Thanks,
Steve
